Holiday Outreach Festival - December 14th

The Freshman Technology Discoveries Classes at Monte Vista High School in conjunction with ASB and ONE.ORG Club have organized the Annual Holiday Outreach Festival after school on Wednesday, December 14th. The students really wish to make a difference and 100% of the proceeds will go to the charities they have diligently researched and have chosen to support. This year they include: Heifer International, Direct Relief, Tijuana Orphanages, Mercy Corps, Keep A Child Alive (Africa), Plan USA, The Global Fund for Aids, TB and Malaria and MV Community Resource Center-Our Families

The Festival will be in the main quad and gym after the minimum day and will include entertainment, games, tasty food & drink and holiday cheer. Please encourage your student to stay and participate in the spirit of the many diverse holidays celebrated.

Winter Band Concert - Tuesday, December 13th

Tuesday Dec. 13th the Monte Vista band will be hosting their annual Winter Concert in Room 701/The Band Room starting at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $5 at the door for teens and adults; middle school students and younger are free! It will be an evening of all-you-can-eat desserts and great music. Please come out and support our students - see you there!

Theatre Semester Showcase - December 9th

Come see the Advanced Performance Class perform scenes and monologues in the First Semester Showcase on Friday, December 9th in the Little Theatre. The show starts at 7:00pm and has a $3 admission. The showcase is also best for ages 14 and up as there are some mature themes.

Grad Nite 2017 - Disneyland May 5 - 6th

The Class of 2017 is headed to Disneyland for Grad Nite on May 5th. The cost is $135 and includes admission into Disneyland, California Adventure and the chartered bus ride there and back. There are only 232 spots available so buy your ticket NOW. They also make awesome stocking-stuffers :)

Send a FINALS Care Package!

Order a "Super Hero Themed" Final Exams Care Package for your student. This $10 PTSA fundraiser helps pay for seniors' scholarships, student programs, Unity Days, Red Ribbon Week, and holiday food baskets for Monte Vista families in need. Care packages include a delicious burrito, a super hero treat, a bottle of water with a super hero inspired quote, and a personal message from YOU! Hair Show/Toy Drive - December 4th

Monte Vista High School, Mount Miguel High School and the California Hair Design Academy are hosting the "Toys on Parade" Hair Show and Toy Drive on Sunday, December 4th from 2:00 - 5:00pm. Admission to the event is a new, unwrapped toy that will be donated to Rady's Childrens Hospital following the event.
Over 250 students are participating in this community event. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

District Marching Band Field Show - November 17th

The annual GUHSD Marching Band and Color Guard District Fall Showcase is coming up on Thursday, November 17, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. at Monte Vista High School. This annual fundraiser features musical performances by all schools in the district and Superintendent Tim Glover will be a guest conductor. Tickets are $8 at the gate. Middle schoolers and under are free.

UCSD Doc-4-A-Day Applications Due November 16th

UCSD DOC-4-A-DAY is geared towards exposing disadvantaged middle school and high school students to the possibility of pursuing a career in science or medicine. The students work in small groups with a UCSD medical student to learn about physical exams, neurological exams, anatomy and various other health related topics. Medical students also hold a panel to discuss issues they encountered upon choosing a career in medicine.
This year's Doc-4-a-Day will be held on Saturday, December 3rd from 8:30am - 3:30pm. Juniors and Seniors meeting A-G requirements, with at least a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply. Applications are due Wednesday, November 16th to Mr. Campillo in Room 316. Click HERE for the application!

Monte Vista High School Awarded Jimmie Johnson Foundation Grant

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson and his wife Chandra, announced on Wednesday, that Monte Vista High School was selected as a recipient of a $70,554 education grant.

The Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Champions Grant will bring students much needed access to technology that can revolutionize their learning. The grant funds the purchase of two class sets of Virtual Reality headsets and smartphones, allowing students to benefit from cutting edge educational technology. Virtual Reality will make challenging concepts such as relative size and distance of planets in the solar system, functions within the human body at the cellular level, and understanding of physics concepts, accessible and highly engaging for ALL learners, especially English Language Learners and Special Education students who may struggle with traditional single modality learning environments.

Since 2009, Granite Hills’ alumnus Jimmie Johnson and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Champions Grant has been giving back to our schools in a highly significant way. He is a true champion!

Fall Sports representing at CIF Playoffs!

In Girls Tennis, Diana Martinez & Susana Espinoza are Grossmont HILLS League Doubles Champions. They will face Bishops in the first round of CIF Playoffs on Tuesday, November 8th at Grossmont High School. 

Girls Volleyball beat Mira Mesa last week in the first round of CIF Playoffs but fell short on Saturday, November 5th against Central, knocking them out of contention. 

Boys Water Polo are ranked eighth at take on ninth ranked San Ysidro in the first round of CIF Playoffs. The game will be at Monte Vista on Wednesday, November 9th at 6:00 pm. 

The Monarch Football Team sits proudly at the number 2 seed in their Division earning a BYE week in the first round of CIF Playoffs. They will play the winner of El Cajon Valley vs Serra High AT HOME on November 18th at 7:00 pm.

Monte Vista visits Suzie's Farm

Thanks to Monte Vista's Pride/ASSETS Program, a group of 40 students were able to attend an after school field trip to Suzie's Farms. As we learned about the history of the farm, their methods of planting and irrigation, how to deal with "pests" in an organic manner, etc students were also taught how to pick the plants without destroying them and were able to bring home a large cache of veggies that they themselves harvested!






District Advisory Council (DAC) Parent Forum - November 1st

The District Advisory Council (DAC) Parent Forum will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 from 6:00-6:50pm at the District Office. The purpose of the District Advisory Council (DAC) is to serve in an advisory capacity to the school district and to have an open dialogue between parents and the school district regarding district programs and policies. This forum is open to all parents of Grossmont Union High School District. We encourage representatives from all parent groups on all campuses to attend (including PTSA, PTO, ELAC, foundations, school site councils, parent booster organizations, etc.).
Each forum will have a different topic to give parents the opportunity to communicate with the Superintendent and other district staff. This month's meeting will discuss School Safety Issues and the LCAP Summary. Click HERE for the meeting agenda.

Monarch Theatre Presents The Servant of Two Masters

Goldoni's eighteenth-century masterpiece is an enduring story of love, passion, and mistaken identity. The play is based on the Italian Renaissance theater style, Commedia dell arte, and reinvigorated the genre, which is so heavily based on carnival, while bringing to it an element of realism, mishaps, mix-ups, confusions, disguises and mistaken identity that come with the style. The show runs November 9 - 12th in The Little Theatre. Tickets are $7 in advance, $9 at the door and $3 for children under 9. ASB/GUHSD Theatre Student Discount is also honored.

Winter Sports - Online Clearance and Physicals

Winter Sports start next month and you MUST complete the Online Clearance process and have a current physical on file in order to try out. The Online Clearance for Winter Sports opens Monday, October 17th and you must "reclear" even if you played a Fall Sport.
Sports Physicals are good for one year from the date of exam; only students with expired physicals must resubmit a current physical in order to tryout. On-campus physicals will be held on Tuesday, October 25th at 2:30 PM.  The cost is $20.00, cash only.  This service is offered as a convenience only.  Students may also get their physicals completed with their family doctor if they prefer.

UT Prep Athlete of the Week: Jahmon McClendon

From the San Diego Union-Tribune: The sophomore tore through the Kearny defense for four touchdowns while rushing for 120 yards in a 50-0 win that moved the Monarchs to 4-1 on the season. McClendon also returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for another TD. Click HERE for the full story.

National Honor Society - Applications Due October 21st

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a prestigious national organization that seeks to recognize and develop dedicated, honest, and hard-working high school students. Our NHS chapter here at Monte Vista strives to establish a community of outreach, integrity and academic focus. We seek out service opportunities in order to strengthen our leadership skills, bolster our social skills and, most importantly, assist communities that are in need.

We are accepting applications for the new school year now! The deadline to apply is Wednesday, October 7. The criteria for membership includes: minimum of 3.5 cumulative weighted GPA, character of integrity, and at least 20 hours annually of community service. CLICK HERE TO APPLY.

Firefighter Career Expo - Sept 24th

Are you a student athlete? A military veteran? A member of a club or team? Or just curious about a career in the fire service? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee’s Career Expos are for you!

Organized by the Cal-Joint Apprenticeship Committee, this one-day expo will provide an opportunity for prospective candidates to interact with fire departments from across the state and learn more about the challenges and rewards that come with a career in the fire service.

MV Cares - 32nd Annual Coastal Clean Up

Over 70 Monarch students made their way to Mission Beach Saturday morning. Instead of towels and surfboards, the students were donned with latex gloves and plastic bags as they scoured the beach for trash.

This is Monte Vista's sixth year participating in I Love A Clean San Diego's Coastal Cleanup Day. The Monarch Team is led by Paula Delgado and Marisa Alvarado, who teach Oceanography and AP Environmental Science respectively. The students arrive at 9 am and are assigned a section of the beach to patrol. In a three hour shift, students typically collect between 100 - 150 lbs of trash.

UT Preps - Brothers Provide Spark for Monte Vista

SPRING VALLEY — The brothers McClendon — Monte Vista’s running back duo of Jahmon and Jamez — ran for 251 yards Friday night in the host Monarchs’ 29-6 win over Patrick Henry.

Jahmon, a sophomore, finished with 133 yards, while senior Jamez ran for 118. Each scored a touchdown for the Monarchs (2-1).

Community Football Night - Friday, Sept. 2nd

Come out and enjoy an evening of football for the whole family as the Monte Vista Monarchs take on the Christian Patriots. JV game starts at 4:30pm and Varsity kicks-off at 7:00pm. There is also a special half-time scrimmage by the Los Toros Youth Football Program. Tickets are $7.00 for adults, $3.00 for children 6 - 8 yrs old and Free Admission for children under 5 and students with ASB cards.

Monte Vista's status as a Title I school is dependent upon the number of families that complete the form and qualify for aid. As a Title I school we receive government funding that allows us to enrich the curriculum with Advanced Placement, AVID and other support courses.  Monte Vista needs every parent to apply. November Ballot - Measure BB


​Measure BB is a local Proposition 39 General Obligation school bond measure on the November 8, 2016, Presidential General Election ballot seeking voter authorization to complete needed repairs and upgrades to Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) facilities for improved student safety, instruction, and learning. Measure BB requires 55% support to pass. A "YES vote" approves the District's plan to upgrade East County high schools; a "NO vote" rejects the plan. All registered voters residing within GUHSD boundaries, will be eligible to vote on Measure BB.

The One.Org Club - Meetings Every Monday

The One.Org Club welcomes all new members who are interested in community service, social activism and fundraising to help the most desperate people in our world and in our community. We are planning trips to the Homeless Center, Museum of Tolerance as well as planning the Holiday Outreach Festival, Stop Hunger Event and much more!  Meetings are every Monday at lunch in Room 811. Chromebook Distribution: Aug 23 - 26

Grossmont Union High School District's FutureForward Initiative will provide chromebooks to every student at Monte Vista. Chromebooks will be distributed August 23rd - 26th by grade level during English class. Students must have their Responsible Use Policy/Distribution Agreement signed by a parent or guardian in order to pick up their chromebook. Monarch Football on KUSI PPR

Monte Vista's Monarch Football Team was featured on KUSI's Prep Pigskin Report (PPR) as they previewed the 2016 football season. Back to School Info!

On Tuesday, August 9th Monte Vista will have its doors open all day for new student orientation, schedule pick up and school business. 

Freshman Orientation: 8:00am - 12:30pm in the Gymnasium
Schedule Pick Up: 1:00 - 2:00pm

The Guidance office will also be open Wednesday, August 10th and Thursday, August 11th from 1:00 - 2:30pm to address any scheduling errors; missing periods, duplicate classes etc. This is not for personal schedule requests such as teacher preference, elective change, etc.

Paper schedules not picked up on August 9th will be available before the 1st day of school on Monday, August 15th.
